Hello to all
We left York this morning to head for Shrewsbury. We took a detour to see The Church of St John the Baptist, Kirk Hammerton,North Yorkshire. Originally dedicated to St Quentin,it is a truly marvellous example of an early stone church. Dating from c.950AD, the Saxon tower and south aisle are constructed from massive roughhewn stones giving a sense of permanence and solidity. Although restored and enlarged in the 19th century, this does not detract from this superb 10th century building.
We then travelled on to a place called Knaresborough. What a delightful village, looked prosperous, lots of lovely shops, lots of peoople around and I have not seen this many bakeries or tea shops in any one place ever. Extremely pretty place.
There are the ruins of Knaresborough Castle, the castle originally built around the 11th century. The view from the castle is magnificent, down to the river across the railway viaduct bridge, quite a view indeed. We had a walk around the town, one of those places one could have stayed quite easily for a few days, we would not have found this had we not been going to see the Parish Church of St John the Baptist yet anor amazing church, with a tower which has Norman foundations and the rest mainly late 12th century and the top storey is mainly 14th century. All these churches are too amazing to take in. They totally fascinate me, not Sam, he is a bit over churches, cathedrals and castles. Mind you if you do not go to the churches etc you do not learn anything about these places.
We then did the journey to Shrewsbury quite a way, but Maisie our sat nav took us on some very scenic routes and one particular road from Skipton to Colne had the most magnificent views over miles and miles of Yorkshire and Lancashire countryside, views to die for. We arrived in Shrewsbury about 4.30 booked into our B&B answered a few emails and went down the road for tea, we have a big day planned for tomorrow as this is a medieval town as well, more castles etc. Talk soon Sam & Sabine
