Benalmadena 16 and 17 June

Hello everyone,
Our holiday in sunny Spain is almost over, it has been very relaxing and slow paced. The last two days we have woken up to the place completely blanketed by fog which has lasted into the afternoon but the hills behind the town were above the fog. It is still very warm and humid and even more so when the sun finally breaks through.
Yesterday we did a day trip to Gibraltar, Sabine had always wanted to go there. When we set off it was foggy and I was afraid that it would still be that way when we got there and we wouldn't see a thing, but about half way there it cleared so all was well. We did a tour of the town and then went part way up the rock to St Michael's Cave which are fantastic caves in the rock which date back millions of years and are full of stalactites and stalagmites. During WW2 it was set up as a military hospital but was not used, part of it is now set up as a performing arena as it apparently has perfect acoustics. We then did a tour of the tunnels built in the rock during the war, there are a total of 58 kilometres of tunnels ranging in size from big enough for two trucks to pass down to pedestrian tunnels. They were built in a period of three years with over 5000 servicemen stuck there six days a week. Most of the tunnels are still being used by the British Army for training purposes. The town itself is quite quaint but full of shops. About 32,000 people live there. Of all our Europe trip the crossing of the border between Spain and Gibraltar was the most officious we have encountered, both to get in and out.
Today was a bit quieter, we are getting organised to leave in the morning, our plane for Ireland leaves around midday, so we need to get organised to give ourselves time to check out and get a taxi to the station to catch a train to the airport. Spain has been a lovely place and we have really enjoyed our time here, will maybe come back again one day. Sabine and Sam
