Tuesday 28th June,2011 - Bowness - The Lake District

Hello to all
Arose early this morning. Had brekky and were at the laundromat in Windemere by 8.30, parking is a major issue. Set ourselves up then went into the hairdresser next door to make an appt for a colour, she said you need to have a skin test prior to a colour it is a EU requirement so she did that and I go on Saturday. With all clean clothes we headed back to our home and made our plans for the day.
We set out for a place called Kendal the drive alone was spectacular the village absolutely lovely, we stopped there for an hour or so had some lunch in the square and then headed off to Sizergh Castle. The gardens the castle quite stunning. It has been the family home of the Stricklands for over 750 years(1239) and they still live there. Sir William de Strikeland married the heiress of the Sizergh Estate, Elizabeth Deincourt, an amazing history really and many changes and renovations and additions. In 1931 the Estate was tranferred to Lord Strickland's daughter Mary and her husband Henry Hornyold. They and their son Lt-Cdr Thomas Hornyold Strickland gave the house to the National Trust in 1950, with most of the contents, the garden, and an estate of 600ha (1.500 acres). Family members will always live there as part of the deal and it is cared for by the National Trust as no one no matter how much money they had could afford the upkeep.
From there we headed to Near Sawrey where Beatrix Potter's home is situtated. We went along a long winding road I said to Sam at least no one else will be there, good heavens, no room inthe car park so we had to find somewhere lucky for the intrepid navigator, we organised our tickets, they are timed mind you because there are so many people there, but how lovely it was all the drawings in her books are of things in her home. Very lovely indeed. Sam wanted to go home after this as he was feeling exhausted. I did the ironing and sent him to the village for milk etc. Got ourselves organised and went our for dinner to the same place we went last night, beautiful meal.
I forgot to tell you something funny, whilst we were going thru the castle I was in one of the bedrooms with many others and this lady said to me this is not a very sexy type of room is it, then she says that is pretty much over for me I am a widow I was trying to keep a straight face and then she says you know love the feelings never go, I said no I know they don't it does not matter what age you get to. We both laughted and went on on our way. People tell you funny thing sometimes, Sam said Sabine absolutely no one would tell me that. Anyway I thought that was funny. Very nice lady.
We are now home and tomorrow we will head off to The Yorkshire Dales. We have a very big tour organised for Thursday. All the best to all Love Sam and Sabine
